Priorities for Lakewood's
Children and Schools
Excellence in Education for Every Child in Lakewood
-
Each and every child in Lakewood deserves the same excellent education, regardless of their income level, neighborhood, or how long they have lived here.
-
The education our children receive should prepare them for whatever path they choose in the future, whether it be college, a trade, the military, starting a business, caring for a family, or any combination of these goals.
-
The Vision of a Lakewood Ranger must be part of everything we do. The core competencies include: critical and creative thinking, communication, collaboration, growth mindset, global awareness and citizenship, and empathy, all viewed through a lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion and social-emotional learning.
Protect Public Education
Public Education is under attack at the state and federal level, and local school boards are the last line of defense.
-
We must work as a team to enact policies to protect our students and community from harmful and invasive measures that threaten their autonomy and damage their mental health.
-
As a Board, we will join other districts to oppose policies that subvert our ability to run our District according to our own community's values, including keeping religious instruction out of our schools and funding our schools fairly and legally.
-
Our teachers deserve the ability to teach our children freely, without fear of persecution or worse from government entities, and we will provide a safe environment for them.
Defend Our Community's Values
As a member of the Board of Education, we need our schools to reflect our community's beliefs:
-
All students deserve to feel seen, safe, and secure. We need to protect the rights and dignity of every student, including members of the LGBTQ+ community, students of different races and nations of origin, and students of different socioeconomic levels.
-
No book bans. No rewriting history. No censorship. We need curriculum, educational materials, and classroom discussions that are free from political and ideological restrictions.
-
We need to continue to provide our students with the best opportunities for growth. Broad AP course offerings and career-tech programs at Lakewood High School. Project Lead the Way starting in Middle School. Art, Music, STEM, Gym, and Digital Literacy instruction every week in Elementary school. Our educational programs should create a pipeline from start to finish that offers our children a wide range of choices and opportunities.
-
Walkability, safe routes, and neighborhood schools that make Lakewood special must continue to be top priorities.
